Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?Diagnosis
There are a number of methods of diagnosis
These allow the practitioner to understand the way a person became ill or to have a condition.
Treatment
There are over 360 special areas on our bodies (usually called points) that can be used to allow the free flow of the force of life for health. By having detailed information the acupuncturist can carefully select and gently stimulate one or more acupuncture points to let the energy smoothly flow again. The needles may be left in for 15-20 minutes or taken out after 1 or 2 seconds depending on the treatment required. The treatments are gentle and painless.
What happens in a treatment?
History taking and first treatment takes one and a half hours, follow ups usually 45 minutes which includes history updating, pulse diagnosis and treatment. The history updating is when the patient explains how they have been since the last treatment, any changes that have occurred in themselves (better sleep for example). It is an important part of the treatment and form part of the continual checking of the treatment plan. Although the treatments are not prescriptive, the practitioner will be thinking about what may be required in the next session. This will be confirmed by the patient's own description on their next visit. All treatments are individually tailored in this way to get the most benefits from the action of the acupuncture points.
How many treatments will I need?
Sometimes two or three treatments are enough at weekly intervals and then spread out to one a fortnight, then one a month followed by three or four through the year to maintain health and vitality.
